One of the advantages of my job is that my clients all use different software, so I get to work with a variety of programs (many of them competitors with each other). This gives me the opportunity to see the pros and cons of each program, so when making recommendations, I tend to leave my personal bias out of it and just report my experiences.
There are many free and paid versions of software programs I like and do recommend to my clients. When it comes to software, I look for the following things:
- It has to run in the background without bothering me with warning and informational messages every few minutes
- It has to come with excellent (free) tech support
- It has to function efficiently without being too many bugs

I'm a HUGE fan of Adobe Software! I love all their products, especially Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat and Dreamweaver! I work in these products daily. If you're building a web site, Dreamweaver is the best software available. And if you're editing photos, Adobe Photoshop is the best. However, the full-featured version of Photoshop can be too complicated for many people (and expensive). Luckily Adobe offers other good photo editing programs at lower prices (like Lightroom and Photoshop Elements). Adobe software at up to 75% off for students, teachers, and schools!
